Concluding Notes
Although having developed from particularly different ethnic cultures and featuring separate types of instruments altogether, the music of Jiangnan Sizhu and Gamelan share consistent similarities. Both have characteristics of a heterophonic texture and both use different forms of ornamentation to embellish pieces. Moreover, Jiangnan Sizhu and Gamelan have opportunities for improvisation leading to a different performance each time a piece is played. Whilst the similarities stated above aim to create a busy, lively nature and a constantly flowing stream of sound almost similar to Moto Perpetuo in both cultures, it is undeniable that Jiangnan Sizhu and Gamelan are not the same culture of music and share drastically dissimilar timbres. However through the exploration of texture, ornamentation and improvisation, links can certainly be made.
